I did not set out to write a book about writing.

I say that from early in the work, not late in it. As I write this, two volumes of the series are finished and two more are underway, with several others already outlined and waiting their turn. This is not the record of decades of practice. It is the record of someone doing it for the first time, close enough to each discovery that the notes are still warm when I write them down.

When I finished the first volume of The Rose Covenant, I discovered that I had learned things I had never expected to learn. They were not lessons about publishing, plotting, or dialogue. They were quieter than that. They concerned memory, place, ordinary objects, families, work, history, and the curious way a fictional world slowly teaches its creator what it has been trying to say.

I also discovered something unsettling: those lessons fade.

A novelist may spend years arriving at an insight, only to find, a few months later, that it has become difficult to recall—not the conclusion itself, but the path leading there. I wanted to preserve those paths before beginning the next book.

So these essays began as notes to myself.

They were written for a single reader: my future self. Before writing the next novel, I wanted to remember what the previous one had taught me. I wanted to continue writing well, and I knew memory alone would not be enough.

As the pages accumulated, something unexpected happened.

The notes stopped behaving like reminders. They became essays. The questions grew larger than craft. Every answer about fiction seemed to point toward another question about memory, place, inheritance, work, attention, or faith. I found myself less interested in technique than in why certain stories feel true, why ordinary objects sometimes carry extraordinary meaning, and why places become inseparable from the people living in them.

These pages are the record of that exploration.

They are not a system. They are not a method. They are not a claim that this is the way to write.

If they have any value beyond my own desk, I hope it is because they encourage anyone reading them to look again at the world from which good fiction eventually grows.

I came to these questions by an unlikely route. My education was in engineering. Much of my life was spent building companies, solving practical problems, restoring old things, and paying attention to how structures endure—or fail. Only later did I realize that fiction asks many of the same things. Every novel is a structure. Every scene must bear weight. Every object has a history. Every place acquires meaning through time and use.

The engineer in me wanted to understand how those structures worked. The philosopher in me wanted to understand why they mattered.

These essays are the meeting place of those two impulses.

One final thought may help explain what follows.

These essays are not the record of how I wrote The Rose Covenant.

They are the record of what The Rose Covenant taught me while I was writing it.

If, somewhere in these pages, a reader discovers not a formula but a different way of seeing, then they will have served a purpose beyond the one for which they were originally written.

That would be a welcome surprise.
